Sony has confirmed that it will indeed hold a press conference at CES 2015 in January, and rumour has it that we might see the new Sony Xperia Z4 then. Sony will probably reveal a number of new devices in January, too, but we’re all focused on the Xperia Z4 for now.
The company recently revealed a new 21-megapixel Exmor RS IMX230 sensor designed for smartphone cameras, which will use image plane phase detection autofocus. According to Sony, it’s the first of its kind for mobile phone cameras. This type of autofocus is usually found in dedicated cameras (e.g. mirrorless), and it allows its users to capture fast-moving objects without a lot of blur. This sensor can also capture real-time HDR video in 4K resolution.
We can’t know for sure that this sensor will actually come with the Xperia Z4, but we would definitely love to see it. Sony is also expected to make a 16-megapixel version of the sensor for mid-range handsets.
As soon as we have more info about this, you’ll be the first to know. 🙂
